Stranger 24: star gazer

Amazed with that genuine gaze

My 24th find walked out of the store quietly with a cap and a backpack. I sensed that she was a kind soul that would also welcome an intruding stranger like me.

After explaining a few details on why I wanna "shoot" her, she was also ready to shoot me back with that wonderful stare. I'm satisfied and thankful with her cooperation. Besides the fact that light was permitting, this pretty lady gave me exactly what I wanted. Bravo, my friendly stranger! Bravo!

I'd like to think that my stranger encounter is getting better in terms of targeting someone who would help me portray a look. I also think I'm probably getting better at convincing strangers (or maybe finding the right stranger). Hmm...

She's one of my genuine "gazers", in line with my first Winning Look, Power Gaze, Interesting 10th, Miss Ooh-la-lashes, Sunshine Girl, Cool Sweetheart and Sun-kissed Lady (gasp)... This girl is on my top list for now. I'd like to call her the Star Gazer.

The soul that can speak through the eyes can also kiss with a gaze.

Stranger 23: sun-kissed lady

The Autumn Sun Kissed Her Face

I like her expression - no pretenses. I think it's the same look she had before I interrupted her solitude. She knew exactly how to play the no-smile game so I'd say we got another winner here!

The afternoon light and the early autumn breeze were perfect. The hair movement added depth just like Framed Artist's. I played between warm and cool to see what suited this particular shot. Warm tones appealed more to me. I felt like summer crept back in while processing her lovely sun-toned skin.

Her eyes here are not as showy or as glossy as the others but that's because some harsh light had her squinting. Maybe if we switched places, I would have had the same effect as Sunshine Girl. But overall, the emotion is beautiful to me - a genuine stare and again, no pretenses. She's a pretty lady under the sun!

Stranger 22: spectacled angel

Drama Behind Another Smiley Face

I had a hiatus after Sophia's school orientation and all the while, I thought I lost my 22nd card. When I finally went back to shooting strangers, I re-wrote that number down.

Along Hollywood Blvd., I walked back to the same spot I stood 5 weeks ago and it all came back to me... I did capture my 22nd stranger! I wonder if she was trying to look for her photo.

I apologize for such a huge delay, Miss 22. There was quite a distraction - when I switched from my good ole desktop to hubby's Alienware on which he installed Adobe Bridge... Ahhh... Excuses! Again, sorry...

Although I (briefly) forgot about her headshots, I clearly remember the small talk between this friendly soul and me... After she pulled up on the side street, got out of her car, she said, "I like your blouse..." I was wearing a black see-through sleeveless blouse layered on top of a white camisole. I think she was also layered - her style, probably.

In my mind, I said, yes! That's the right approach. A small talk are somewhat a clear indication that a stranger is approachable and likely open to suggestions. So, when she agreed, I also remember her telling me she smiles when she walks.

Yeah, I wanted her to stare just like the others - you know, that look-through-me-blankly kinda thing. Or, drop that smiley face and power gaze me. She's internalizing here to do just that.

She (I forgot her name. Was it Kellie? Sorry!) is my 3rd model with glasses after Cool Sweetheart and Framed Artist. I'd like to call her the Spectacled Angel because that's what I thought of her when I overexposed her photo here on Flickr...

Stranger 21: framed artist

A Picture Full Of Interest

I had been eyeing this lovely lady as soon as I spotted her waiting in line while talking with a friend. It's funny how I played like a stalker. That's how street photographers roll, I guess - prowling for light, beauty and all things interesting. You just know when something or someone stands out among the crowd.

So, this is even more interesting - a photographer meeting a painter - both artists...

When I asked if I can have her picture taken, she was a little hesitant. It's okay and it's just normal. I was ready to accept her no. But then she was convinced because her friend, Model Vibe, was alright with it.

After bursting some shots, she asked if I got a card. Silly me, with excitement and all the talking, I almost forgot to hand it out. I asked what her name was and when I couldn't spell it, she traded me hers...

This is another interesting thing - Nelonie meeting Timony - both unusual names...

Remember Cool Sweetheart? Both images are full of interest. (I know. I've been using this interesting word forever. Any suggestion?) The outcome is satisfactory for me - beautiful muted blue eyes behind those sunny yellow glasses, full lips of complementing hue, clear face with a nice lasting impression and natural hair movement that was perfectly frozen. Like a breeze of fresh air, Miss Timony Siobhan's photo left me feeling good about myself.

There's just one thing more I need to know... Did it pass the photographed artist's taste?

Stranger 20: model vibe

Nostalgic Appeal

I spotted Stranger No. 20 talking to her friend, my 21st, while waiting in line for the store cashier. Then I looked away to find some other targets (and/or a good vintage buy) in case I didn't catch her. In the end, I still found myself turning back to her direction about a few meters away.

Hubby and I were already outside when suddenly 20 and 21 stepped out. It came out like a pretty normal thing to me - to ask for some headshots while showing my Flickr photostream via iPhone. I think I may have programmed my brain to pursue them because I didn't feel nervous nor shy. There was some kind of vibe, I guess...

She was easy to persuade even when I stopped her from putting her sunglasses on. I like that she was cool and giving. I mean, hey, there's nothing to be insecure about some close-up shots when you are photo-worthy.

I usually like clear bright pictures; but during post-processing, I felt like dimming this a little bit. It reminds me of that old photo I once saw in some '70s or '80s magazine. The model's stare, matte lips, slightly tilted head and overall expression evoke a sense of nostalgia. Plus, the purplish tone set the mood for a beautiful vintage vibe.

Tall and lovely Jamie projected an image that seemed stylized for a magazine, not an ordinary out-of-the-blue stranger shot. She loos like model, doesn't she? Well, maybe she is...

Stranger 19: Vi-u-tiful Vi-sitor

Girl From The City

One or two eye-to-eye contacts with this lovely city girl and I knew she will be my next stranger...

A visitor from San Francisco, like Lady Star, and a 'laughter-fighter' like Smiley Face, I told Vi it's kinda typical to some. In front of a camera, it's almost always automatic to smile. It's like we're programmed to do it since we started school: "Ok, class, say cheese!" Who wants a boring class picture? But anyway, my stranger no. 19th tried and I appreciated it, especially the fact that she was readily available for a not-everyday mugshot like this.

Now, on with the processing... Do you, guys, know Bridge? Well, I've been doing a lot of photoshopping ever since but never knew about this software until my 15th stranger. I think I forgot to click this feature when I first installed my Adobe Photoshop. (I also think you either use Lightroom or Bridge to process your raw files. I don't have LR.)

Anyway, while 'bridging' this image, I decided to merge two versions - one with a softer tone and one with 100% clarity. My intention was to make the facial skin appear smoother and the eyes bolder respectively. Just notice when you adjust your clarity everything becomes clear and noticeable. I don't do that on my headshots. Again, mine is focus on the eyes (even if I kinda failed with Pretty Stare) and away from any facial distractions or imperfections if any. So, in short, two portraits in one.

Stranger 18: sweet grinner

Frozen Stare, Warm As Summer

If I'm not mistaken, I saw my 18th stranger in Kodak Theater that same afternoon but wasn't able to ask her. When I saw her again in Goodwill, I knew it was the right time. So, very smoothly, I made my approach as she stood outside the store waiting for her family.

She was delighted to have her picture taken. That shyest grin of hers, which seemed to hide a big glossy-lips smile, rendered a wonderful outcome...

After color adjustments, the scene came together with sort of a vintage summer feel to it. The pale blue tone atop the photo blends well with her pinkish skin (particularly the bottommost photo). The background and her hair colors are in her eyes that are clear and beautiful. It's kinda deceiving. It's like we had a day on the beach when in fact, this was taken at 7:17pm. I so love the effect that I'm jealous again...(LOL).

This mild mannered lass from Michigan reminded me of Poised Mama - one of my first batch of stranger portraits. A pretty lady, this Nikki is . . . and a pleasant soul to have worked with. Even her lovely family was just as warm when they flashed their goodbye smiles to me. Miss 18th's brother (I think) wished me good luck on my 100-stranger project just like Cool Sweetheart.

Mollie and Sylwia with Huffy bicycles

I was taking photos of her and her friend's bicycles beforehand and never thought that the owners will be my models, too... I knew it - a girl with a summer hat (Stranger 16) and a cool attitude would never say no for an answer! ...and her Polish friend (Stranger 17) who was busy her Huffy bike here gave me the pose I requested despite her tiredness.

Sylwia, whom I named eye candy (because...) was down on her knees trying to unlock her bicycle when I politely interrupted... When they biked away, Mollie wished me: 'Good luck with your project!' What a cool sweetheart! :)

Stranger 17: eye candy

Cotton Candy Portraits

Here's my 17th stranger (9th on Flickr) - Sylvia with a W - who is a friend of Molly with an IE. (It's a lovely misspelling coincidence. Don't you think?) I thought the former's name sounded out-of-this-country and indeed it was. She was from Poland.

This Polish beauty was down on her knees and busy trying to unlock her bike. But I had to politely interrupt so as not to lose my momentum. She said, "I don't care," which meant it's ok to take her photo. She also said she was tired but I was happy she wasn't too weary for a pose.

While processing her raw file, I thought, hmmm... another potential eye sparkler . . . and yes, I'm right. Not only that, behind her emerged the most colorful background I'd ever photographed so far... I was like, what on earth was that?! Where was it? Where was I? Dang, that was pretty! I was so lovin' the colors that I decided to work around it. So, I gave it a little twist for my 100 strangers set on Flickr...

Anyway, cool filters were the most appropriate for this young charmer. I think the painterly style suits this kind of portrait - considering her skin tone, the captured light on her eyes and that yummy cotton candy background. What a fairy-tale-like portrait! (I think I'm jealous. I gotta go back there for a photo of ~~myself~~ Sophia. LOL.) ...And no matter what I did, I couldn't help but paint her. Did I mention I used to draw faces and models before? Well, Sylwia gave me the opportunity to do that again . . . digitally... Sweet!!!

Stranger 16: cool sweetheart

Beautiful Blue Behind Those Glasses

I was taking photos of her and her friend's bicycles beforehand and never thought that the owners will be my models, too... I knew it - a girl with a summer hat and a cool attitude would never say no for an answer!

I was taking down her name on paper when she said, "Actually, it's Molly with an IE." :)

Well, I must say, Mollie gave me two challenges that afternoon. First was name spelling and second, eye-color capturing.

In my other posts, I mentioned the eyes are primarily what my focus are. Here, as you can see, she had her eye glasses on. This being a street shot (as opposed to stylized portraiture), I didn't feel comfortable telling her to take them off. I was the one asking for a favor so whatever this young stranger was wearing, I shouldn't change that. Besides, the shot should be realistic; that is, whatever was there on the street, take it.

So, I brought this home and found out later that behind those Superman spectacles is a pair of beautiful blue eyes.

Mollie, by the way, was the first to wish me, "Good luck with your project!" as she biked away with her friend. I thought that was really sweet!

Stranger 15: sunshine girl

Girl With The Sun In Her Eyes

I was a little hesitant about asking this lady as she inched her way towards where I was . . . kinda odd..

"Hi! I'm Nelonie. How are you?"

My concern of her being afraid of me completely faded when she immediately flashed her beautiful smile. She was unassuming and all ready to give her expression. So, without further explanation on what this 100 strangers project was all about, she stood there all smiles with the sun in her eyes.

(But I did show her my other portraits, my daughter and my 1st stranger to rev it up a little.)

While shooting, I was getting a little embarrassed as it was taking so long for me to get it right. I thought - how am I gonna show this up on Flickr when the image is not worth it? The sun was up and blinding her. The light was harsh and casting shadows on her pretty face. Truly, I was grateful of her not only for saying yes but also for being so patient to follow my hubby's instructions. (He, upon sensing my frustration, had to come down and interfere.)

We had her stand against the street with the sunlight coming from her left side, a technique I did here. Two more sets of three and that was it. I had to let her go no matter what, even if she was too nice to stay, as it was unusually long for a stranger shot.

To my surprise during post-processing, the light turned out to be a very good player! In fact, I chose her image to be my first black and white portrait on Flickr...

So Leah, who just moved from I-forgot-to-ask-where, is now a local of Los Feliz, California and a face on both my 100 Strangers set on Facebook and Flickr.

Stranger 14: lady star

Her height was remarkable and I couldn’t resist asking her this favor. But I had to fully explain my intention of taking her photo as she was so close to saying no. Thank you for your time, Gizelle!

While post-processing, I thought of giving her the title, Lady Star, because of that little tattoo on her cheek bone – her beauty mark. I also can’t help but notice the divalicious lashes. Those sure make one’s eyes pretty. And bravo for giving me that portrait-perfect shot.

So, this is what I’m talking about two-strangers ago. If the subject is tall, advise her to look down towards the lens. This (6 feet?) tower of charm did a pretty good job here ‘cause it looks as if we were eye level. As star indeed!

Stranger 13: Miss Ooh-la-lashes

Photos With 'Chill

This proud LA-born-and-raised stunner was very cooperative, just like that sweet girl from Portland, Oregon. If I had my other lenses with me, I would have taken some pretend candid shots, which she seemed to be so willing to do. I imagined how fun that would be!

It’s good that she got situated against those greens because those are being reflected perfectly into her eyes.

Look at those awesome eyelashes. Don’t you just love them? Well, I do and I almost complemented her. But I fast-tracked and asked her name instead. Xochitl. It sounds like ‘so chill’ – a befitting name – ‘cause this girl is one cool Angeleno.

Stranger 12: glossy eyes

I asked this girl for her picture while showing my 100-strangers project album on my Facebook page. She liked it and so I had her stand against where Towering Beauty was.

Stranger 12th has well-defined eyes that are attractive. I love how her irises shimmer here. But then again, like Charming Sparklers and Stunning Portlander, I don’t think she looked straight at me.

Lesson learned: Don’t get lost in the subject’s eyes. Pay attention to the entire face as well as how the head is positioned. No to chin-up.

You as the photographer can see what your models can’t see so you should so act as the director. For headshots, like this, advise them to look straight into your lens and as much as possible, eye-level with your camera. If they are taller than you, tell them to turn their heads down a little.

So, I didn’t do any more exposure and light adjustments here because these will possibly draw attention away from those gorgeous glossy eyes. I applied 50% blurring to some areas of her face to make the eyes pop beautifully even more.

Stranger 11: stunning Portlander

Pleasing Inside And Out

Though we’re ready to leave, my eyes still roamed around for that one last Hollywood stunner . . . and I got lucky with Lia of Portland, Oregon. She was blonde-haired like my first lovely model, tall like my second tower of beauty and remarkable like my third Spanish eye wonder.

She asked, “Do I smile or…?”

I should’ve said both yes and no because whichever way, the images were all pleasing (except that she, OMG, didn’t look through my lens). Nevertheless, I was all excited to see these blown up on my computer screen and more…

Six Canon bursts and a short casual chat after, we parted with a friendly hand-shake. Hopefully, we’ll meet again whether it’s face to face or Facebook...

Stranger 10: interesting tenth

I went back to the French crowd upon noticing another interesting face who had an equally interesting name – Massanje.

I was happy that she gave me an unpretentious look. I mean, this was how I saw her before I took the shot and yet another beautiful gaze.

During post-processing, I found her face to be versatile because every filter I put on her suited her – warm or cool. So, I chose each of that tone per portrait. I thought she completed my perfect 10.

Stranger 9: poised mama

Here is Deeana, the mother of this cute little toddler whom Sophia, my daughter, befriended. (photos to follow)

A great opportunity, I said – while daughters played, mothers got acquainted...

So the pretty mama gave me that same unadulterated look she had before and after the shot. Pure emotions, preserved. Poised and simply beautiful!

Stranger 8: smiley face

She asked to have their family photo taken and I willingly obliged because, you know, she’s gonna return the favor. This is exactly what I had in mind when I chose Hollywood Blvd.

Laughingly, she said it was hard not to smile. I guess because she was having a fantastic afternoon with her sweet family of three.

Through my viewfinder, I saw how her reds tried to hide her whites. Six snaps and her grin just stayed in the picture. That’s ok. I can tell there’s pure honesty to her emotions and her smile makes her more appealing!

Stranger 7: power gaze

Then my lens shifted to another stranger from French Guiana. Getting a cue from stranger 6, the friend painted me a stern look. It was remarkably fierce that while I focused, she made me feel like I was her target.

Her frozen gaze was better than a put-on smile-for-camera mode. I like the intensity, which seemed to inflict me during post-processing.

We were in an eye-to-eye battle and I lost by a thousand blinks. But still, I emerged as the winner because finding a stranger like Andee was accomplishment enough.

Stranger 6: pretty stare

I should’ve invited my 6th to a better lit area because I hardly caught her eye color here. As opposed to everyone else who got at least six camera clicks, this French Guianian only received three. I was too conscious of her friends up my shoulder while I was down on my knees focusing on her.

Lesson learned: Be braver to ask your photo subject to come with you to a preferable spot, away from by-standers. Stay eye level. Don’t kneel. In as much as you want your stranger to feel comfortable, you need to be relaxed, too.

The least I could do was burn color to her lips and add brightness around her. But let me point this out. I do like her pretty stare. I bet if I brought her to light, it would have been prettier. Right, Pamela?

Stranger 5: charming sparklers

A Sparkler From Down Under

She had just barely rested on a round concrete bench under the sun when I intruded. Cheerfully, she asked where her photo is going to be put up as we walked towards the wall where I took Laura and Marta.

I requested Tracy to remove her sunglasses so I can see her natural reflectors. They were alive and lit up with amazement. I can literally see myself in her eyes, inside her pupils. But, oh no . . . wait! She wasn’t looking at my lens. But, nonetheless, it was a pleasure taking photographs of this Australian charm.

Oh, my goodness, she was enchanting! And her look… That look... That was the expression I was looking for! A genuine stare . . . as if with great wonder why I was doing what I was doing…

I’m really really, as in really glad I didn’t totally ignore her. So far, she had the most picturesque expression of all, which made think she was used to this.

Stranger 3: eye wonder

Stunning Eyes of Wonder

I walked back up trying to get away from onlookers who probably knew why I was loitering. At this point, I felt a bit insecure and paranoid. But what the heck…

Then I noticed this girl who has the most interesting pair of eyes – stunning! I stopped her to say my intention. She and her friend said I talked fast that I had to repeat myself slowly. I articulated only to this eye-wonder without even looking at her friend. It was she I was only interested in.

Laura was kinda shy and conscious so she kept looking away. I think I gave her the most clicks trying to catch light through those fascinating Spanish eyes of hers.

A Charm Among The Crowd

I quickly spotted this charming young lady among the crowd as she was stepping down the stairs… I thought she was alone and if I knew she wasn’t from the start, I would have not asked her. But while she was showing signs of agreement, she looked towards, I guess, her parents. It was as if she was silently saying, this looks interesting; wait for me; I gotta have my picture taken.

The background, this time, provided a nice color, which kinda confused me if her eye color was really green or blue. I hope she tells me…

I’m so glad and proud of myself to have asked her. So excited that I’m not even sure if I got her name right – Kendell or Kendall?

Stranger 1: flawless face

My First Beautiful Stranger

The things that attract me first and foremost are the person’s eyes. So when I spotted a good-looking pair, I braved my way towards her, prepared for my second rejection… Thank goodness she was all up for a pose!

This girl is almost flawless. I played with contrasts and never did I see any unpleasant markings nor any trace of sunspots on her face. Her make-up suits her well, too, accenting her lovely features. It gave me the opportunity to use a cool filter as opposed to warm tones that I normally use.

I’m kinda overwhelmed with joy of having this jumpstart that I forgot to ask her something...

Thank you, Miss ‘whatsyourname’ for being my first beautiful stranger. I’m very pleased to have a moment with you!

As we drove home one afternoon, I spotted these young lovers walking sweetly in synch. I quickly grabbed my camera and, lo . . . what a shot, I thought. I like the outcome.

The girl, I find her really appealing. I thought of finding her one time to show these photos. I would love to take portrait shots of her, too.
